Different Roads Home is my favorite song I’ve written — and the hardest one to let go of. That is largely because I am really proud of the lyrics and the story. I’d love to take you down my road with this song and dive into the heart behind this song. I’ve included some Different Roads Home inspired journal prompts at the end as well!
Let’s do it!
Verse 1
Stepped foot through the door, naïve and wide eyed
White walls that looked like the start of my life
Buying the lightbulbs (in the wrong size)
Different Roads Home opens up on the beginning of the road it laments diverting from. One of the most picturesque and on the nose “new chapters” is moving into a new apartment. In this case - your first apartment. There is such a sweet innocence when I think about moving into my first apartment. She hadn’t been hurt yet, she’d never experienced poverty in the way she soon would. Let’s be honest, she’d never had an electric bill come wintertime! All she could see when the door opened into the living room of that first apartment was much craved adulthood and a new beginning.
I tell my younger friends to cherish this moment every time I buy a first housewarming gift. I often say that if I could vacation for a week in one era of my life, it would be nineteen in that very first apartment - when I didn’t know anything about being an adult (like that lightbulbs had different sizes).
